My husband and I are stable, intelligent people who married young (19 and 20) and had children young (a 17 year old daughter and a 15 year old son). Both of us struggled to finish college and provide for our family at the same time, but we managed to do it and would not have changed anything, even with the student loans that we are still paying. We have now been married almost 22 years, are very happy, and hope to retire to the good life. We had financial problems in the past (no bankruptcies), including tax issues when our tax advisor in Missouri not familiar with Kansas state taxes. We managed to pay off the IRS and are working on paying off the state?s back taxes We both have great, professional jobs and have gained many years of experience in our industries and were headed in the right direction until January of last year. My husband has a salaried job, but is also able to make overtime pay and we had become dependent on that overtime for lots of things, like my son?s braces and extra credit card debt. Last January the overtime was completely cut and although it was great for our family that he was around more, we were forced to adjust our finances throughout the year to pay for some of the extras that we thought we could afford. Then, in August, my grandfather passed away and all of his very meager assets were placed in probate because his will was filed improperly. He still had mortgage payments and we have been trying to help my mother keep up with them until his house can be sold. This put even more of a strain on our finances and things just snowballed. My husband?s company is in better shape now and some of the overtime pay is back, but we have found ourselves with extra debt that we would like to pay off so that we do not become dependent on overtime ever again. We want to be able to save that money for our future and help our children pay for college when we can. Our daughter is a senior in high school this year and is working on ways to pay for her own college education because we believe that you appreciate your education more if you have to pay for it yourself, but we would also like to be able to help her out sometimes. Eventually we would like to get involved with Prosper as lenders. The loan would be used to pay off some credit cards and to fix our 1997 Jeep that needs a new differential, which we expect to be around $1,000. We are hard working, honest people who would really appreciate help right now so that we can get back on track. We own a house (about $10,000 in equity) and 2 cars that are paid off. Our son?s braces and our back taxes will be paid off in 2 months and that alone will free up $250 per month in addition to the $500 per month that we could afford to pay towards a loan. We plan to pay off any loan early. Thanks for your consideration. |
