In March 2003, during spring break of my last semester of graduate school at Duke University, I took the drastic step of having a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass at the Duke Weight Loss Surgery Clinic. I weighed 343 pounds, was close to turning 40, and getting ready to leave the marketing world behind and launch into my new vocation as a full-time United Methodist minister. Something had to be done, and surgery seemed my only option. Five years later and 130+ pounds lighter, I know what it is to be reborn. I just celebrated the fifth anniversary of my procedure with a check-up at the weight loss surgery clinic, which tells me I'm a model patient. Now I'm about to turn 45, and I'm healthier, happier, and more active than I've ever been. Wow. The next step in my physical transformation is abdominoplasty (also known as a tummy tuck) to remove the thick fold of skin which remains around my midsection. Because I'm healthy and active, my insurance company considers it a cosmetic procedure and therefore only available at my own expense. Truth be told, I live in the public eye and want to look good in a golf shirt. I can't hide under a preaching robe forever. As an ordained United Methodist minister, I have guaranteed employment until retirement and my housing is provided at no cost. I have no delinquencies in my credit history, and pay all my bills with automatic draft. I think I'm somewhere in the top end of Prosper's C range; when I last pulled my Experian FICO score on 6/20/08 (through myfico.com), it was 683. |
