I am a 37 year-old lawyer. Three years ago, my son (now 6 years old) was diagnosed with autism. The expenses for behavioral intervention have been significant (almost $20,000 per year), and are not covered by insurance. My income at the time of his diagnosis was not sufficient to meet those expenses, and I used low-interest rate credit cards to pay for them. My low credit rating is attributable solely to my amount of debt. I have a perfect payment history with all my creditors, and have no late payments on my credit report (see my credit profile). I have never had any negative event reported to a credit bureau. But because of my total outstanding debt, my card issuers have steadily raised my rates and, consequently, my minimum payments. Things have changed for the better, and will only continue to improve. Nine months ago, I changed law firms and now make $30,000 per year more than I did when I racked up this debt. I will receive a bonus and raise in December. I am making my payments now, but am making little progress paying off the debt with its current structure.
