I am a 37 year-old successful lawyer whose income has steadily increased over the last few years. Three years ago, my son was diagnosed with autism. The expenses for behavioral intervention are significant, and not covered by insurance. At the time, I used credit cards to pay for those expenses. My income at the time was not sufficient to meet those expenses, and it took longer than expected to find a job that paid as much as the one I have now. I now make $30,000 per year more than I did at the time of my son's diagnosis. I have a perfect payment history with all my creditors, and have no late payements on my credit report. But my creditors have steadily raised my rates--and, consequently, my minimum payements--because of my amount of debt. I would like to pay off this debt at a lower interest rate, and the possibility of working with an individual lender (and not an impersonal card issuer) appealed to me.
