Pay off Credit Cards Reduce Debt

I am a single 25 year old male living in the Atlanta Ga area. Like many young (and older) people today, I've accumulated too much credit card debt, and find myself making very little progress in paying down the balance. My mother encouraged me to come to this site. She is also a Utopia member and had a very positive experience a few months ago and received funding. About myself -For several years after high school and 2 years of college I worked in a couple of "go nowhere" jobs, just getting by but not making progress. At the beginning of 2005, I was laid off due to the company closing. At the time, it was of course depressing and scary, applying for jobs alongside hundreds of others doing the same. In hindsight, that layoff was the best thing that could have happened to me. It forced me to make a change in direction. After applying in several counties for positions of firefighter and correctional officer, I was hired in May of 2005 as a correctional officer for a county jail on the south side of Atlanta. It may sound strange, but I love my job. It is interesting to say the least, rarely boring, good pay, great benefits and probably one of the most secure jobs around, you never hear of a jail closing. I have received one raise since being hired, will receive a 5% increase in July and also in July will complete schooling which will further my certification process. This will increase my capabilities of future promotions and pay increases. I am not proud of the debt I have accumulated, but I am proud that I have been able to keep my credit rating at a decent level. I have always made my payments on time even when I wasn't sure how I was going to. I am now making about 20% more than I was in 2005. By using this loan to pay off 2 of my credit cards, the payment will not be an increase in my monthly pay out, but will allow me to see progress in reducing my debt. Within 10 months I will be paying off my vehicle and couple of other small accounts amounting to about $500 a month less in monthly payments. It is my goal to be able to purchase my own home within 2 to 3 years. Thank you in advance for considering my loan. |
